Brushing Your Teeth Can Improve Your Orthodontic Results

By | Orthodontics | No Comments

If you are receiving orthodontic treatment from Dr. Muhammad Abey and our team, it’s important that you continue to brush your teeth on a daily basis. Routine tooth brushing can make or break your orthodontic treatment, which is why you should clean your teeth following every meal and snack during your time with braces. We review the importance of brushing your teeth while wearing braces and how it can impact the success of your treatment.

Your dental hygiene largely depends on how well you are brushing your teeth every day, even if you don’t have braces. The food particles and plaque that accumulate in your smile have lots of bacteria and can put your teeth at risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing your teeth removes these harmful substances from your smile before they have the chance to cause problems.

If plaque is allowed to remain on your teeth for a long time, it can cause the color of your teeth to darken where the braces aren’t covering tooth enamel, causing your smile to have yellow spots when your braces are gone. By brushing your teeth every day, you can have a healthy and beautiful smile with and after braces.

Brushing your teeth helps to keep your orthodontic appliance clean, helping your treatment to remain on track. Braces are made to care for your smile, but they also require care in order to remain effective. As long as your braces are in good shape, you have a great chance of having successful orthodontic treatment.

We invite you to contact Wayne Family Orthodontics at 973-341-3180 today and schedule a consultation if you need to speak with our orthodontist about how to brush teeth with braces in Wayne, New Jersey.

Many patients undergo orthodontic treatment to improve the look and health of crooked teeth, as well and correct a bad bite. Over the years, orthodontic care such as braces has become very popular. If you are considering braces, there are many different types that could help you achieve a stunning smile.

Modern orthodontics offer a variety of benefits to address a wide range of alignment conditions for children and adults. The following options for braces may be ideal to enhance your tooth alignment:

Traditional Metal Braces
The most common type of braces, metal braces can benefit children, teens and adults due to their durability and permanent nature. Traditional braces can improve several kinds of bite problems, more so than other types of braces, making them the most ideal for severe conditions.

Ceramic Braces
Though similar to metal braces in look and function, ceramic braces are clear or tooth-colored to blend with your teeth and offer discreet treatment. They can be recommended for older teens or adults since they are more brittle than metal braces and can stain if not cared for.

Invisalign® Clear Aligners
These removable plastic trays fully cover the teeth to gradually adjust the bite, and while they are not as fast acting and powerful as metal braces, their convenient nature and discreet appearance make them very popular for adults.

What You Should Know About Orthodontics

By | Orthodontics | No Comments

Very few people are born with perfectly aligned teeth. Because of this, many people can benefit from orthodontic treatment. We recommend that patients come in for their initial exam as early as age seven, but people of any age can benefit from orthodontics.

When you or your child come in for your orthodontic exam in Wayne, New Jersey, Dr. Muhammad Abey will determine whether or not you can benefit from braces or another form of orthodontic treatment. Our orthodontist may use diagnostic tools including a review of your medical and dental health history, a visual exam, models of your teeth and bite, and X-rays and photographs. If orthodontic treatment is recommended, a treatment plan will be formed for your specific needs and goals.

Some common alignment and bite issues that orthodontic treatment can correct include:

– When the front upper teeth sit too far in front of the lower teeth in an overbite, which is sometimes referred to as buck teeth.
– When the lower teeth sit too far forward or the upper teeth are too far back in an underbite.
– When there is space between the biting surfaces of the side or front teeth when the back teeth are together, which is called an open bite.
– When the center of the lower teeth does not line up with the center of the upper teeth in a misplaced midline.
– When there are gaps or spaces between the teeth because of missing teeth or another issue.
– When the dental ridge is not large enough to accommodate all of the teeth.

The Advantages of Straight Teeth

By | Orthodontics | No Comments

If your teeth are crowded, crooked, or gapped, our orthodontist may recommend braces or Invisalign® to gently straighten your teeth over a period of time. It may come as a surprise to learn that straightening your teeth provides many benefits to you and your smile.

Unfortunately, teeth that are crooked are crowded are difficult to clean properly. Overlapping teeth can hide plaque and food particles. This can heighten the risk of tooth decay. It is much easier to thoroughly brush and floss teeth that have been straightened through orthodontic treatment.

Teeth that are crowded or gapped can cause swollen, red gums. Once the teeth are properly aligned, the gums can fit more securely around the teeth. Gums that fit properly around the teeth are a healthy, strong defense against gum disease.

Having crowded, gapped, or crooked teeth can be embarrassing. Some people with misaligned teeth are even ashamed to smile. A straight smile can enhance the beauty of your smile and boost your confidence!

We invite you to contact Wayne Family Orthodontics today to learn more about orthodontics in Wayne, New Jersey, and to set up an orthodontic exam with Dr. Muhammad Abey. We look forward to seeing you and making your dreams for a straight smile come true!

Orthodontic Braces Need Consistent Oral Hygiene as They Correct the Alignment of Your Teeth

By | Braces, Orthodontics | No Comments

The traditional orthodontic braces installed by Dr. Muhammad Abey includes brackets, wires, bands, and other hardware components that are secured in your mouth to help correct the alignment of your teeth. This is done by attending routine adjustments to have your braces tightened as they gradually reposition your teeth.

If some part of your braces is damaged or you suffer from cavities, the complications and treatment process could alter the tension being applied to your teeth. This can significantly increase the amount of time it takes to fully correct the alignment of your teeth.

If twice daily brushing and your evening flossing session don’t prove effective at thoroughly cleaning your teeth and braces there are a few special oral hygiene tools you might want to try.

The small, angled brush head of an interdental brush can help remove food material from some of the hard to reach areas around braces hardware. It can be especially helpful for freeing small food particles from bands and spacers.

An oral irrigator device like Waterpik® creates a stream of water that can help loosen and wash away food particles and plaque. Just keep in mind that this is not a viable alternative to flossing.

Incorporating waxed dental floss in a floss threader can help you work the strand between teeth and around the gumline. This is especially helpful for flossing under braces wires.

If you had braces installed at Dr. Muhammad Abey’s orthodontic clinic in Wayne, New Jersey, and you have concerns about how to maintain good oral hygiene practices, you can always call 973-341-3180 to speak to one of the specialists at Wayne Family Orthodontics.

How to Respond to an Orthodontic Emergency

By | Orthodontics | No Comments

You are on your way to reaching a healthier, straighter smile when your braces become damaged. Don’t worry. If this happens, call our office for an appointment with our orthodontist. Until your appointment, there are some things you can do to get help with common orthodontic problems.

Loose brackets – If there is a loose bracket, you can apply a piece of orthodontic wax to reattach loose brackets temporarily. Wax can also be placed over the bracket to provide a cushion between the bracket and the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth to increase comfort and protection.
Poking or broken wire – Use a cotton swab or a pencil eraser to move a poking or broken wire to a more comfortable, safer position. If the wire can’t be moved, place a small amount of orthodontic wax over the end to keep it from poking the inside of your mouth. If the wire is still causing discomfort, you can cut it with scissors or nail clippers. If a sore develops in your mouth from the wire, rinse with warm salt water or an antiseptic mouthwash.
Discomfort with braces – It is normal to feel discomfort for about a week after your braces are placed. After routine adjustments, discomfort is also normal. You may take a non-aspirin pain reliever to relieve discomfort. Placing a heating pad or a warm washcloth on the jaw can also relieve soreness.

To Guide Your Child’s Oral Development, Get Them an Orthodontic Exam by Age 7

By | Orthodontics | No Comments

When we picture someone with braces, it’s usually a friend or someone we know as an adult with big, bulky metal gear in their mouth resistant to show their teeth or smile. Though this is what we’re used to seeing, it’s not the norm when it comes to braces. Most of the time braces are applied at a much earlier age during childhood when there is still oral development taking place. Recommendations state that it’s the best practice to bring children into (practice name) for an orthodontic exam before they turn 7 years old.

The reason for the age recommendation is that by that age, all of the primary, or adult, teeth are beginning to come in and replace their original set of teeth grown as babies. Because the teeth are fresh and just coming in, it makes this the perfect time to correct them if needed.

There are a number of developmental issues in oral health that can be apparent by the age of 7 when kids start getting their mature teeth. Orthodontic correction can ensure the teeth and jaws grow in a healthy way and correct any problems that might have arisen. If you wait until the teenage years, the jaw bones have grown strong and can be harder to correct because they are nearer to the adult stage and are often not easy to fix.

If you make the important decision to begin making changes that will ensure the growth of the jaw and eruption of permanent teeth happen in a healthy development pattern, you can avoid difficulties. It will also likely be less costly in the long run to attack these problems from a young age and give your child a healthy and functional smile, not to mention not worrying about embarrassing braces in their teenage years.

To schedule your child’s consultation with our orthodontist in Wayne, New Jersey, Dr. Muhammad Abey, call 973-341-3180 today. We look forward to helping your child on have a great smile for years to come.
