The Advantages of Straight Teeth

By | Orthodontics | No Comments

If your teeth are crowded, crooked, or gapped, our orthodontist may recommend braces or Invisalign® to gently straighten your teeth over a period of time. It may come as a surprise to learn that straightening your teeth provides many benefits to you and your smile.

Unfortunately, teeth that are crooked are crowded are difficult to clean properly. Overlapping teeth can hide plaque and food particles. This can heighten the risk of tooth decay. It is much easier to thoroughly brush and floss teeth that have been straightened through orthodontic treatment.

Teeth that are crowded or gapped can cause swollen, red gums. Once the teeth are properly aligned, the gums can fit more securely around the teeth. Gums that fit properly around the teeth are a healthy, strong defense against gum disease.

Having crowded, gapped, or crooked teeth can be embarrassing. Some people with misaligned teeth are even ashamed to smile. A straight smile can enhance the beauty of your smile and boost your confidence!

We invite you to contact Wayne Family Orthodontics today to learn more about orthodontics in Wayne, New Jersey, and to set up an orthodontic exam with Dr. Muhammad Abey. We look forward to seeing you and making your dreams for a straight smile come true!

How Invisalign® Can Help

By | Invisalign | No Comments

Malocclusion is crooked teeth or a misaligned bite. If you have malocclusion, Dr. Muhammad Abey may recommend Invisalign® in Wayne, New Jersey, to help you reach a straight smile. Invisalign is a set of aligners that is designed specifically for your smile. They are worn over the teeth for 20 to 22 hours a day to gently straighten the smile. After treatment, you may notice certain positive changes in your life.

Better Oral Health
Inflamed gums can be the result of teeth that are too crowded or gapped. Unhealthy gums are a sign of gum disease. With straight teeth, the gums can fit more properly around the teeth.

Improved Oral Hygiene
Properly cleaning crooked teeth can be difficult. Missing plaque and food particles often happens when the teeth aren’t properly aligned. Properly aligned teeth are much easier to care for. In addition, cleaning your teeth is much easier with Invisalign than with braces, as Invisalign aligners are removable.

Better Overall Health
The teeth and mouth are the window to the health of your body. Some conditions in the mouth, like gum disease, are linked to conditions in the body. As a result, improved oral health leads to improved overall health. Straight teeth can also correct speech and chewing hardships, jaw issues, and eliminate unnatural wear on the tooth enamel.

How to Care for Teeth with Braces

By | Braces | No Comments

Orthodontics is used to straighten the teeth and correct the bite. This can improve not only the appearance of your smile, but the health as well. Now that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, there are some things you should know about caring for your teeth and braces.

Dental Hygiene with Braces
Dental hygiene is a little more complex while wearing braces. When flossing, work the short end of your floss through the space between the upper part of the tooth and the arch wire. Then use a sawing motion to gently work the floss between the teeth.

When brushing, use a soft-bristled brush. Brush both up from the bottom and down from the top of each tooth. After this, brush with a proxabrush, which is designed to clean between the brackets. Insert the brush both from the bottom up and from the top down between each bracket.

Avoid These Foods
While wearing braces, there are certain foods that you should avoid, as they can break or loosen the brackets. These include:

– Tough-to-bite or hard foods
– Chewy food
– Hard pretzels, carrots, nuts, and popcorn
– Corn on the cob

How Invisalign® Can Aid Your Smile

By | Invisalign | No Comments

For those that have crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, traditional braces are not the only option. If you would like to straighten your teeth without the use of metal brackets and wires, consider Invisalign® in Wayne, New Jersey. Invisalign is a series of clear, comfortable, removable aligners that straighten the teeth over time. Each set of aligners is worn on the teeth for about two weeks.

Invisalign has several advantages over braces. While traditional braces require brackets and wires that can mar the appearance of your smile, Invisalign aligners are clear and virtually invisible. The wires of braces can poke the inside of your mouth, causing irritation. Invisalign aligners are made of smooth, comfortable plastic. Brushing and flossing can be time consuming with braces, but Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can brush and floss as you normally do. Those who wear braces cannot eat certain foods, like bubble gum, popcorn, and sticky foods. However, with removable Invisalign aligners, you can continue to eat your favorite foods.
